Myth: “I don’t think I can volunteer because it will take too much time.”
You know the needs: helping youth reach their potential, either by tutoring specific subjects, or mentoring to provide positive interaction with adults outside of the family. And you are motivated to help. However, you have a concern that is keeping you from committing: “I just don’t have that kind of time.”
Mythbuster Tip #1:
We know you juggle a variety of obligations, but you might be surprised to learn that you can devote as little as one hour a week to tutor or mentor. What impact would it have on your current schedule if you blocked out that time every week: a longer lunch hour? less time exercising? fewer Facebook statuses browsed? Our volunteers tell us that it isn’t hard to make the time and they become more focused, both on their student and on their own time management. Importantly, our volunteers tell us that their time is well spent, “We have as much or more to learn from them as they have to learn from us.”
