MTC conducted an essay contest open to all high school senior mentees. It was a very difficult decision as there were many excellent essays submitted. The winner is….Scarlette who won a MacBook Pro laptop. In her winning essay, she shared how her mentor, Midge, supported her throughout high school and helped her prepare for this next step. As the first in her family to attend college, Scarlette valued her mentor’s guidance with the many aspects of college applications. “Without her help I wouldn’t have been able to write some of the essays that I needed for college,” Scarlette wrote.
“Other than college readiness, she gave me the confidence to talk freely about myself and grow to open up to people more as an individual. Since we are both more on the quiet side, it was fairly easy to understand each other and bond on our likes and dislikes. She is always open and willing to listen to me rant or talk about what is going on in the world or the different types of mythical creatures that come from my culture. Everytime we go out it is as though I am having a breath of fresh air in between my days of ongoing stress that comes from life.”
MTC was thrilled to offer three additional prizes- HP Chromebooks. Many students utilize loaned laptops during their high school years. As they face the next steps after graduation, no matter whether that involves college, job applications, or a combination of the two, owning a laptop is a tremendous support. Here are more quotes from our Essay Contest:
“Even though Sue is my mentor, I consider her as a good friend. As any good friend would do, she would look out for me and always be by my side. She helped me see situations from a different perspective. Not only was she a huge help when it came to school, but she also listened to me rant while taking an interest in my interests.”
“My mentor to me is someone who is trustworthy and the nicest person on the face of the planet. My mentor has met my parents, and my parents accept him as one of their own.”
“Having Espe in my life especially in the early years of my highschool career was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I am so content that I got to know the amazing person Espe is. We have so much in common, and we enjoy the same things, like trying new food, culture, and similar backstories. Espe made me feel like I could count on her to tell her anything, she was the adult figure I needed in my life at the time.”
