In a year of “differences,” we see one constant – helping students through challenges. We’ve all had challenges and MTC’s tutoring program is no exception as we navigate a new type of tutoring. We are grateful for the patience and perseverance of our new and existing tutors as we learn together how best to help students in this new environment. We are developing best practices, training tutors on remote tutoring platforms, and working with school staff who are themselves stretched and facing new challenges. Thanks to the extraordinary work of our Tutor Program Managers, Christy Flahavan and Jocelyn Saiki, we are jumping hurdles and placing tutors with students who are struggling with academics and remote learning. We have recently met with administrators in both MVWSD & LASD to continue improving and expanding our programs. They appreciate the ways we are impacting students and we value their partnership as we develop new strategies to support students.
In spite of challenging times, we’re starting to see the fruits of our effort. One tutor recently received this text from her 8th grade student: “Hi!!! So I actually got the second highest score in my class on the test! So thanks for your help!!” Hearing this news, the tutor said, “this made my day!”
